Barn Owl

The barn owl is an extremely rare species in Southern Alberta.

This sculpture has set a bronze cast barn owl in an amethyst geode.

The idea to set an owl inside the geode was suggested by a geologist who observed the geode after I flattened the bottom for mounting.

Description

This barn owl was cast with 2.4 kg of silicon bronze in two parts, the owl and the base.

The owl was given a bismuth nitrate patina for the white tones on the face and breast.  A ferric nitrate brown patina was applied on the other areas to provide the rich brown colour on the body.  It was shaded with liver of sulphur and black highlights on the eyes, beak, and claws with a black patina.  The cast base for the owl was darkened with liver of sulphur.

The amethyst geode is from Sidi Rahal, Morroco.  It is typical of the area, showing distinct coloration and internal structure specific and characteristic for this region. The pink outer rim is composed of opal. The layer within it, is usually red or red-brown and contains a concentration of iron compounds (hematite and goethite).

The piece is mounted on black walnut.
